Spend a Day in Fore

Explore Spend a Day in Fore

Just a 2 minute drive from Fore Distillery, the inspiring Fore Village is nestled in a valley full of wonders, legends and scenic landscapes.

Fore is home to ‘Fore Abbey’, and well-known for its famous ‘Seven Wonders of Fore’.
The early foundations of the Abbey were founded by St. Féichín in the 7th Century. The Abbey later developed into a Benedictine Monastery when it was re-established by Hugh de Lacy in the 13th Century. The monastery and area has a turbulent history of raids with the monastery being burnt 12 times! However, the ruins still stand strong today, offering a glimpse into Fore’s monastic history and are a popular tourist attraction.

As well as boasting Fore Abbey, Fore also attracts those who wish to discover its famous Seven Wonders which include: the monastery on the bog, the mill without a race, the water that flows uphill, the tree that won’t burn, the water that won’t boil, the anchorite in a cell and the lintel stone raised by St Féchín’s prayers. Many of the wonders come from St. Féichín’s time in Fore and his miracles of faith. Fore is also a hinterland of legends being supposedly crossed by Queen Maedhb on her way to take the brown Bull of Ulster & being a short distance from Lough Derravaragh where the famous legend of ‘The Children of Lir’ originated.

It is easy to see that although small, Fore Village is a truly incredible place in an idyllic valley of rolling hills, greenery & marvellous history.
