Is our poitín made from potatoes?

A question we get asked often! Fore Valley’s Irish Poitín follows an ancient recipe inspired by local Benedictine monks who introduced distillation to Ireland using grain. Our mash combines malted barley, unmalted barley, & oats for a smoother, richer flavour.
In the past, potatoes were commonly used by home distillers and farmers. Pushed out by heavy taxation & poitín’s illegalisation in 1661, potatoes were a more accessible starch source allowing these craftspeople to keep the spirit alive.
Since poitín’s relegalisation in 1997, brands like ours have revived the tradition, using various quality ingredients & modern techniques to create a richer, more refined spirit!
